Great story. The scale of it just astounded me. The film is also worth a look, obviously you dont quite get the depth, but the scenery is breathtaking.

Fantastic book. I just taught it in a Spanish Lit Survey and for some reason the students really liked it. Mendoza makes it easy to talk about urbanization.

Pleurisy is really inflammation of the pleural layers. Lots of things can do that, unfortunately, and pleurisy is a really horrible. As mentioned, it’s a symptom of something else, so your doctor would need to rule out bacterial, viral, physical or chemical stimuli (giving up smoking is always a big help; you probably found that youself). There are so many things that could cause it, hopefully your doc is working on that. In the meantime, do what you can to find out what makes it worse, and what alleviates it. It’s valuable info for your doc, and helps will make life more bearable for you while you’ve got the lurgy.

I’ve had pleurisy since Thanksgiving, diagnosed by a chest xray. The doctor initially thought I had walking pneumonia( & I was on an antibiotic for a sinus infection so maybe this is what caused it). It’s still not gone. Had to quit smoking because the smoke hurt….I’ve been on antibiotics and steroids. I’m exhausted, have no cough, but do have a very low grade fever. From what I’ve read this can go on for months…but I will have to go for a CT scan if my chest continues to hurt.
I was wondering about what other “underlying conditions” could cause this. Do you mean an infection, virus or other illnesses? I am trying to find out as much as I can to get rid of this horrifically painful thing. Drinking lots of herbal tea, staying out of the cold when possible, getting lots of rest, etc.
