Gathering the Water – Robert Edric

It’s a book about a man who in the 1840s is given the job of overseeing the evacuation of a valley before it is flooded to form a reservoir. It’s short, well-written and tremendously poignant as the water is tracked gradually rising against, and eventually submerging, the village buildings. Don’t read it if you want to be cheered up though.
